Four friends who had seemingly lost touch after the dissapearance of one of their friends, band together against an anonymous outsider who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, while also investigating the disappearance of their best friend.
Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields rekindle their friendship almost a year after their friends dissapearance. After all receiving threatening texts from "A" they decide to figure out who is working against them.
Spencer seems to be the main protagonist in the show within the group four. We learn about her strict home life and smarts as she charms her way through school and life in Rosewood. She does however, have a tendency to kiss her older sisters, boyfriends, which is just one secret A has on her.
The beloved and notorious mean girl of Rosewood, PA goes missing leaving her mess behind for everyone else to clean up.
In season 1, the disappearance of Alison cause a lot of communtion within the Rosewood community. Alison is not shown throughout the season, just only in minor flash backs from before her disappearance. She does also make visits to the girls while they are each sick, seemingly as a dream/illusion. Later on in the season, we find out that “Alison's body” was found buried in the backyard of the DiLaurentis house, where Maya St. Germain now lives. The autopsy stated that she suffered a blow to the head and subsequently suffocated to death, with dirt being found in her lungs.
Toby, Caleb, Ezra, and Maya all share the commonality of dating on of the liars. Without realizing, they are instantly wrapped into their drama with them.
In season one we find out that Toby (Emily's neighbor) is step siblings with Jenna Marshall. His father remarried after his mother's death. Jenna had been blackmailing Toby to have sexual relations with her. In season one, Toby is also convicted of killing Alison, but is later let go to lack of evidence.
Caleb in season 1 spends most of his time making spare cash off of hacking people's phones. He is discovered to be camping out at the high school as he moves between foster homes. Hanna eventually takes him in to crash at her house for a little awhile, when they eventually start up a relationship.
Each one of these four date the liars at some point within the show. Some relationships are messier than others, and some last a lot longer than most. Some stick around and some leave before it ever gets good.
Samara gets together with Emily after trying to help Paige come out to her family. They end up dating for a good period of time, however, they are broken up by A after a couple episodes.
Friends for the most part, because you can never be sure who you can trust. Who is in on it, they have to test everybody in order to find out.
Anne or Dr. Sullivan, is a therapist hired by the liars parents to help them with their current A threats. She too, however, begins to recieve threats of her own and is forced to leave Rosewood and the girls.
Holden is introduced in season two as an old friend of Aria's family. He makes a deal with Aria to go on dates together as a cover up for her and Ezra to get together, as it allows him to take a karate class without his parents knowing, as he has a heart condition.
Each character takes a turn for the worse. And half of them end up dead. They weren't as careful as they thought they were.

The DiLaurentis family is not what it seems. Half of their children, aren't even their own. Divorces, murders, and runaways galore.
The Montgomery family fight some tough battles with Byron's affair. Ella makes due and keeps busy with a new job and new hobbies, while Mike on the other hand, not so much.
The Hastings also have a lot of secrets regarding paternity. Melissa's marriage with a murderer was also not a great look for the family.
Tom leaving the Marin's leaves Ashley and Hanna mentally numb. They don't know how to live without him, but somehow make due by stealing eveyrthing they want in life.
The Fields family have a hard time accepting their daughter. Wayne also ditches the family for work a good portion of the show.
The infamous A. The person that makes the liars lives miserable, as the same person that scared Alison away in the first place. Her weaking friendship with Hanna is just the motivation she needs.
