I've observed this problem once myself, and Dan confirmed it in his test:

Example 1 worked fine and provided the list of 5 hostnames, but they were all the same host ex. all 5 were cn339 for me due to having the cores on the same node Example 2, my jobs were able to complete successfully and the cat joblog gave all 0's where Exitval was. Example 3 was almost identical with the 60 job steps and it worked fine.

I tested out the three examples and I was able to almost duplicate your data that is in the github page.
Example 1 worked fine and provided the list of 5 hostnames, but they were all the same host
ex. all 5 were cn339 for me due to having the cores on the same node
Example 2, my jobs were able to complete successfully and the cat joblog gave all 0's where Exitval was.
Example 3 was almost identical with the 60 job steps and it worked fine.
